Heather Lee: Encouraging Moments of Retreat through Music, Poetry, and Thoughts for the Soul

Heather Lee is a Benedictine Oblate at the Holy Wisdom Monastery

Part of her calling as an oblate is to live grounded in the Rule of St. Benedict and her own rule of life, inspired by the oblate formation process. Her rule is a song, titled, "Listen, Stay, Obey".   She has a very rough demo recorded but is hoping for guidance and help in a professional recording and arrangement soon.

Listen, stay…listen, stay…listen, stay…obey.

This is my rule—a mantra to say.
A path to conversion that shepherds the way.
It’s a song to be sung in each moment, I pray…
in each moment…each breath of each day.
Listen, stay, obey.

Listen, stay…listen, stay…listen, stay…obey.

Listen means honor that God is in all.
The choir of creation is now ringing the call.
Listen means discipline-with ear of the heart.
Meditation, a walk, sacred readings to start
Silence starts and enfolds each new day.
Listen, stay, obey.

Listen, stay…listen, stay…listen, stay…obey.

Stay means drop down to the still lake within
or nest in the treetops that dance in the wind.
Exhale, be patient--the wait won’t be too long
Yoga, a swim, or a walk with the dog.
Follow through seasons with prayer, work, and play.
Listen, stay, obey.

Listen, stay…listen, stay…listen, stay…obey.

Obey means respond with courage and trust.
Align my will with God’s--do and be what I must.
Draw forth new creation to grow, heal, and feed.
With gentle encouragement, be of service in Thee
in this choir of creation where I’m rooted today.
Listen, stay, obey.

Listen, stay…listen, stay…listen, stay…obey.

And, this rule humbly knows that it’s all intertwined.
Any line drawn between is not clearly defined.
There’s listen in stay, and stay sings out listen.
Obedience begs listen and stay.
God’s funny this way.
Separate verse becomes one in refrain.
Three words become one in the same

Listen, stay…listen, stay…listen, stay…obey.
