Heather Lee: Encouraging Moments of Retreat through Music, Poetry, and Thoughts for the Soul

Here are lyrics to all of Heather Lee's songs, the most recent album is first:

In the Beginning

In the beginning rang the note of a bell
then a string, and a key, and a chime
they rang and they sang, and they floated along
in the belly of space and of time
And God heard the singing
it all went on ringing
the belly the breathing
the death and grieving
the truth and believing
the cries of the living
are singing a beautiful song

The pain from the womb
drew a voice from the tomb
a lassie for mother to hold
rang a note, struck the chime
in the belly of time
joined the ringing the singing of old
a beginning…to guard and to mold

Las grew up believing the notes on her page
mum sang soft and then loud in her ear
the silence she chose
was a note all its own
and it rang and it sang loud and clear
from the beginning…her song was her fear

In the beginning rang the note of a bell
then a string, and a key, and a chime
they rang and they sang, and they floated along
in the belly of space and of time

They swirled round and round
to the fiddle and harp
his smile and her joy claimed a name
notes sang from the floor
rang of love to the core
drink ran through the chorus… sing more
a beginning again….nothing more

Rings old and rings long
only notes for the song
the loud and the silent
the right and the wrong
in the belly of time float along
they ring out…a beautiful song

In the beginning rang the note of a bell
then a string, and a key, and a chime
they rang and they sang, and they floated along
in the belly of space and of time

Death and life strewn together
 where rocks meet the sea
the tide rings as it places each name
the cliffs and the heather
sing in blooms to the sky
while darkness of drink rings its notes like a cry
from the beginning…it rings by and by

The trees reach out low on St. Stephens Green
over water that thirsts for the sea
hand in hand they stroll round
the despair sleeping sound
it all rings in the breath from the ground
goodbye’s a beginning she found

In the beginning rang the note of a bell
then a string, and a key, and a chime
they rang and they sang, and they floated along
in the belly of space and of time
And God heard the singing
it all went on ringing
in the belly the breathing
the death and grieving
the truth and believing
the cries of the living
are singing a beautiful song

One day at a time

A Button-
There’s a jar in my grandmother’s house
that sits in a drawer in the back
it’s filled up with buttons
all shapes and all shades
for wonder and fancy
for play and for games
Why does she keep them
I ask her…I muse
She says you just never know
when someone can use….a button.
Chorus
I could use…I could use…a button
or a zipper…a needle and thread
something to keep this together
something to hold it instead
something to keep it from slipping away
to latch on and slide through…make it stay
I could use…I could use…a button

There’s a list full of prayers in a box
that sit silently under her bed
it’s filled up with questions
all shapes and all shades
for wonder and fancy
and of the games that we’ve played
why does she keep them
I ask her…I muse
She says God’s like my buttons
I always can use…a button…

Chorus

And I’ve got a box of my own
hidden under, and deep, and away
it’s filled up with fragments
all shapes and all shades
of treasures I’ve broken
and torn on my way
Why do I keep them
I wonder sometimes
They sit like the jar for some time…for some time
when a button…a zipper…some glue…or a prayer
heals them or mends them or holds them somewhere
I could use…I could use…a button.

Chorus

Further Reflection: Step 2 and 3

Annie and Anna and Anne
Annie’s eyes
flash a light
with her news in the air
with him…she sits there
on the edge of her chair
shiny new finger
she lingers…she stares
as she dares to

Chorus:
Let go of the side
of the cliff giving way
quit grasping and clawing
at the edge
it’s the fear of the fall
not the fall that is pain
let go of the edge
giving way

Anna switches
the dial
amazing grace on the air
with pen…she sits there
signs the papers and stares
empty new finger
she lingers…she cares
as she dares

Chorus:
Let go of the side
of the cliff giving way
quit grasping and clawing
at the edge
it’s the fear of the fall
not the fall that is pain
let go of the edge
giving way

And Anne’s washing
the clothes
sprays perfume in the air
in the dark…she sits there
she’s pulling her hair
long pointed finger
in the mirror she stares
as she dares to

Chorus:
Let go of the side
of the cliff giving way
quit grasping and clawing
at the edge

Bridge
With a change in the name
there’s a change in the frame
a new edge to the fight
with the edge
life changes
rearranges
makes strangers
Annie, to Anna, to Anne
the edge…giving way
we’re fighting to stay
and fearing the fall
from the plan

Annie and Anna and Anne
Annie and Anna and Anne
Annie and Anna and Anne

Further Reflection: Let go and let God

Unknowing
If you’re water in the river, do you know
Are you certain you’ll wash to the sea
Would you know that the path lies
direct as the crow flies
Would it speak like you’re talking to me
You know you think that you’re flowing
you think that you’re knowing
the course is carved out—it’s clearly downstream
but you may be for sowing
the willow that’s growing
or for the thirst of the bird…the bird or the bee

If one day the blind man could see
If he stood there and said how it was so
would you scorn at his healing
would you judge his revealing
would you direct him to all that you know
You know you think that you’re flowing
You know you think that you’re knowing
the course is carved out it’s clearly downstream
but you may be for sowing
the willow that’s growing
or for the thirst of the bird….the bird or the bee

Would the water say stay
Would the water say go
Would it say something more
than be where you flow
Would it say that it’s certain
to be round the bend
or say there’s just one way
to loving a friend

No, you don’t know  the reason
and you don’t know the season
you don’t know the role that you play
you don’t know if you’re flowing
where this river is going
the truth………..
is in the unknowing
is all that the water would say.

Dive (Into the Light)
A grassy field, face to the sky
next step is a lift…up from the heart
arms open wide…like a dive
but up and out…drawn deep inside
A dare to risk…to be alive
to be alive …trust it…trust the…dive
Chorus:
I’ve got your back won’t let you down
I’ll be your feet here on the ground
you’re not alone
you carry home
you carry home…I’ve got your back
you’re not alone

A crowded space, an empty stage
the next step is a lift…up from the heart
into the light…like taking flight
up and out…from dark of night
A dare to risk…to claim a right
to claim a right ..trust it…trust the flight

A choice to stay, to see it through
the next step is a lift…up from the heart
on bended knees…like a seed
up and out…in dire need
A dare to risk…to break and bleed
a risk to bleed …trust the… heart to lead

Chorus:
A shattered friend, a broken life
the next step is a lift…up from the heart
into the hurt…like a bird
up and out…a song has stirred
A dare to risk…to love and
learn to love and learn …trust it…trust the turn

A scary place…A broken self
A story left upon the shelf
A chance to show for love to grow
arms wide open…just let go
up and out…heart conquers doubt
I’ve got your back
within…without
Chorus:

The Loons
Not a cloud in the sky on the fourth of July
Lake’s buzzin shallow and deep…. the loons float on by
I’ve not a care in the world….’cept for the loons

Calling…ooooooooooooo
Calling…ooooooooooooo
Calling…ooooooooooooo
Calling…baby…sweet baby
where are you.

Grandma’s frying the eggs…Mom is shining the bar
Sisters singing old hymns…as she strums her guitar
I’ve not a care in the world…’cept for the loons

Calling…ooooooooooooo
Calling…ooooooooooooo
Calling…ooooooooooooo
Calling…baby…sweet baby

Kids are soaked to the bones…they got fire on their minds
flames of sunshine and rockets…shine in their eyes
I’ve not a care in the world…’cept for the loons

Grandpa’s revving his boat…Uncle’s pounding a nail
Dad’s grilling his catch….the dog’s chasing her tail
My hearts free as a bird….maybe free as the loon
how she haunts me…with a song that says
free hearts call out too…oooo…ooooo…oooooo
Calling…ooooooooooooo
Calling…ooooooooooooo

Smile
Just passed by a sign…said the road I’m travelin on
is tree-lined, smooth, and scenic…for just a mile
But I’m weary from the past road, it soaked into my songs
got a choice to make about this… I think I’ll smile
I’ll smile on this mile for a while
I’ll smile on this mile for a while

On the next mile, I can go back to cryin
On the next mile, back to bleeding and dyin
If this mile don’t suit my style….there’s always another mile
So I think I’ll smile
I’ll  smile on this mile for a while
I’ll  smile on this mile for a while

On this mile, the birds are singing…all the games I’m playing, I’m winning
On this mile the life I’m living…it seems worthwhile
I got a choice on how I’m seeing…if I’m doubting or believing
And my heart is surely beating…I think I’ll smile
I’ll  smile on this mile for a while
I’ll  smile on this mile for a while

On the next mile, I can go back to losin
On the next mile, back to fightin and bruisin
If this mile don’t suit my style….there’s always another mile
So I think I’ll smile
I’ll  smile on this mile for a while
I’ll  smile on this mile for a while.

Harvest
An Emptiness precedes the harvest
in a space that draws summer to fall
all stripped away, no room to say
can’t say anything…nothing at all
The “I” meets us there in the branches
and the shoots that must be cut away
for birds and for beasts to do what they will
We’re left only fruits of today

Chorus
That’s the space before the harvest we face.
A space where so much don’t  belong
In these wide open spaces…an emptiness graces
the moments before the harvest is gone.

A cloud of dew settles over the prairie
fruits hanging low on the trees
there’s a space to sit under, but bowed down on the ground
come humble…on hands and on knees
Raindrops fall to ground in the sunlight
as the wind blows them down from their beds
caught by the leaves then ripped from their dreams
for the harvest is coming instead

Chorus

Golden grasses lean tall towards the sun
whether rising or setting the same
Reaching out for the call to empty it all
to lay down all but your name
The wind has a bite of its own
the yellows and purples don’t rest
red’s on the maple and soup’s on the table
and I’ve tears for the years in my chest

Snakes slither by… the birds take to the sky
doing things that I did yesterday
before the emptiness called…the summer to fall
made a space that looms large round it all

Chorus

Further Reflection: Isaiah 18

Never in a Million Years
Did you think this would be…imagine it all
Did this seem the place…to be standing up tall
after the tears…in spite of the fears

Never….No Never…Never…No  Never…never….my dear
Never…in a million years.

Did you think of his eyes…imagine her smile
Did this seem the way….we’d make it worthwhile
Catching her tears…holding his fears

Never….No Never…Never…No  Never…never….my dear
Never…in a million years.

And how  ‘bout that song…or that race that you won
How ‘bout that climb…uphill…in the sun
How ‘bout this view…after all we’ve been through…Did you think…my name here?

Never….No Never…Never…No  Never…never….my dear
Never…in a million years.

Gather the Fragments
Gather the fragments… can you do it for me
Pick up all the pieces of love that you see
They’re lying here broken cast down on the ground
I did not have room the first time they came round

Gather the fragments of bread broken for me.
Space inside was too small my eyes too blind to see.
They wait here in baskets these gifts of Your grace
for hunger to trust and my soul, larger space.

To claim all the fragments lying here on the ground.
To see the abundance…to know I am found.
Your eyes raised to mine and to know that it’s true
I’m fed daily by fragments of love given by You.

Further Reflection: John 6

Here are the lyrics for the songs on Heather Lee's first album, She Stands.  Following the lyrics are references to passages of Scripture and other spiritual program references that inspired the song and may inspire you as you listen to and reflect on the words.

She Stands
Morning light burns mist of night
water mirrors sky
She and I
we search the tide
hunger burns inside

Chorus:
The Heron stands
she stands there still
lonely beauty
calm to kill
graceful hunger
she waits her fill
still…she stands..there still

Lightning strikes in dark of night
splits love’s sacred tree
blocks the way
at break of day
still… she stands with me

Chorus

Still…still
come down to the lakeshore
fly in from the hills
be still…wait your fill
be still…wait your kill
be still…leave your will
still…still
fragile still

Chorus

Further reflection: Psalm 46:10
Step 11

Hit by the Light
How can I see
with it shining on me
in a light that I can’t comprehend
put a veil on my face
try to silence the blaze
that’s screaming so loud round my head

Chorus:
Were you hit, hit…hit by the light
did you stand up and fight
for all of the right you were dreaming
Were you hit, hit…hit by the light
did you deflect it in fright
run for cover…shut tight
your eyes for the bite of its gleaming

How can I hear
with the shining so clear
in a light that is fire inside
burning a way
that’s so far from today
with a calling that will not subside

Chorus

And how can I taste
and how can I touch
How can I hold all the sky
And how can I be
what shines cross the sea
and hits me so hard I could die
oh it hits me not answering why
oh it hits me demands that I rise
hits me
hits no more lies
oh it hits me it hits me
now cry cry
cry to the light in your eyes

Chorus

Further reflection-Exodus 34, 2 Corinthians 3, Matthew 17
Step 1

Of Course I Cry
For children’s cries
their need to wait
for my need too
for all the faith
I cry for me
I cry for you
seems nothing left
that we can do

Chorus:
Of course I cry
Of course I cry
I cry for love
I have inside
it rises up
against my throat
comes pouring out
of my broken soul

For friends I’ve lost
along the way
for those I’ve found
who choose to stay
I cry for words
that reach your ears
for those left inside
for love and fear

Chorus

For songs I sang
for those unsung
for the good I want
that can’t be done
I cry for your joy
and for your pain
I cry for mine
it’s all the same

Chorus

Comes pouring out
of my broken but living
loved and forgiven soul

Step 4 and 5

Fear and Love
I was sitting with my brother, nearing dusk, on the sand
he gathered his breath, gripped his drink in his hand
said I was hoping, my friend, you’d help me understand about fear
fear, my dear of the Lord
Do you fear the Lord? Tell me how it’s so?
Is he holding a sword? Is he telling you no?
Is he judging your deeds? Grabbing the seeds?
as they blow
blow through the winds of your soul
Do you fear the Lord, I wanna know.

Chorus:
Fear the Lord…said God to the earth
Fear the Lord…for your death… for your birth
Fear the Lord…in the darkness in the light
Fear…fear the Lord…tonight.

His eyes teared up, said he knows about love
been thinking long time about love from above
if God’s perfect love casts out fear
what’s fear?  Fear, my dear, of the Lord
Do you fear the Lord? Tell me how it’s so?
Is he holding a sword?  Is he telling you no?
Is he judging your deeds? Grabbing the seeds?
as they blow…blow…
blow through the winds of your soul
Do you fear the Lord, I wanna know.

Chorus

I answered him with wonder in my heart
fear and love where they stop…where they start
I said I fear. I fear, my dear, I fear the Lord
You see I fear the Lord for the faith in your eyes
for the colors in the sun as it falls from the sky
for the heron’s stand, for the cry of the lark
for the crashing of the waves on the shore in the dark
for my children’s arms, for the hope of the dove
Yes, I fear the Lord for Her love.
Yes, I fear, fear the Lord, for love

Chorus

Further reflection: I John 3:18; Ecclesiastes 12
Step  2 and 11

Stone Woman
Stone woman
singing and crying
with the dead and the dying
Alone stone woman, alone
with her love in the rainfall
on the path where my foot falls
on bones—on bones

Chorus
Stone woman
can I seep in through
can I rest with you
in your cold
cracked open mold
can you sing me the song
of the loss that you grieve
heavy there for so long
seeking found
it’s a song that I know
but have not found the way
yet  the way that it holds
me to ground

Stone woman
loosened hair falling
naked breast longing
I know—stone woman
your pose
with her music in lap lies
the weeping of all eyes
remembrance sits deep
in the bones--bones

Chorus

Further reflection: Step 11

The Narrows
Walk, walk, walk the narrows
walk the narrows to the sea
The narrows narrow, beg for arrows
each step I make with me
so I walk, walk, walk the narrows
walk the narrows to the sea

A narrow crack
a twisting stream
blade of knife cuts me clean
Birth canal
pulsing veins
narrowed eyes search my name as I

Walk…walk…walk the narrows
walk the narrows to the sea
The narrows narrow, rage and barrel
but the current runs with me
as I walk, walk, walk the narrows
walk the narrows to the sea

A narrow street
a string that rings
air that stands beneath the wings
Chapel pews
Gasping breath
narrow escapes from thoughtful death as I

Walk…walk…walk the narrows
walk the narrows to the sea

The labyrinth
the walls of caves
Needles piercing skin to save
Body standing
still and whole
A narrow passage to the soul so I

Walk…walk…walk the narrows
walk the narrows to the sea
The narrows narrow, I beg for arrows
then one step…we’re free so I
walk, walk walk the narrows
walk the narrows to the sea

Further reflection2 Edras 7: 3-9, Psalm 16:11

Halfway between
Here I stand
halfway between
Here I stand
I’m free
I turn around
look to see
I thought you’d come
along with me
I thought you’d come
along with me

Chorus:
Along with me
I thought you’d be
holding on my hand
Along with me
thought sure you’d be
with me here where I stand

Here I stand
halfway between
Here I stand
I’m free
Led across
but cannot see
If you will be
along with me
I thought you’d be
along with me

Chorus

Here I stand
free to cry
free to cease
the why…the why
Some will not
walk on with me
I cannot see
no  need to see
I grieve, I dream
This moments free
alone, halfway between

Step  7

Long Winter
Saw a robin perched upon a tree today
Felt the earth beneath my feet as I watched her fly away
Inhaled the richness of the moss
Felt the suffering of the cross
Press a little closer to resurrection day

Oh this long winter
Driedmy bones
This spring moisture

Calls mehome
Gives me thirst for allI need to say

Felt raindrops falling on my eyes today
For the first timesince the ice set in, I felt it slip away
I put my face up to the sky
And with the earth I stood and cried
It’s easier to hide my tears that way

Oh this long winter
Froze my heart
This spring melting
Brokeit apart
The honest card is all I’ve left to play

Watched rivers rushing over rocks today
Saw power mixed with helplessness and watched it flow away
I sat beside that swirling pool
And prayed I could be carried too
Away from all the fear that’s in my way

Oh this long winter
Locked me in
This rushing river
Reminds me again
Of some promise of a love that clears the way

Saw a robin perched upon a tree today
felt the earth beneath my feet as I watched her fly away

Further reflection: I John 3:18; Psalm 63
Step 5 and 6

The Good Samaritan
They beat me and cast me aside
I was cowering bleeding and blind
on the road out of town
I laid myself down
I laid down and waited to die

Chorus
You didn’t help me
no you stayed far away from me
watching me bleed
watching me need
now you stand there so righteously
like it was a choice for me
it wasn’t a choice you see
I didn’t choose
who would take mercy
mercy take mercy
Lord, who would take mercy on me

My holy and learned passed by
from my nakedness shielded their eyes
the followers too
I think I saw you
cast a glance but cling tight to the line

Chorus

From a place I dared not to dream
a foreigner she fell to her knees
she gathered me in
risked love for my sin
it was mercy she showed mercy on me

Chorus

Further reflection: Luke 10:29-37
Step  6 and 7

Milkweed
Hardened and dry
hoarding inside
what delights in the light of the sun
holding on tight
growing in might
for a journey that has not begun

Chorus:
I’m ready to die
I’m ready to fly
like the fall
milkweed…I

Broke open let go
just  blow blow
float off to a place in the sky
maybe  land once again
somewhere with no end
no hoarding no need for goodbye

Chorus

Open my heart let love fly
a seed at a time, a seed at a time
A smile at a time , an eye at a time
an care at a time, prayer at a time
goodbye at a time

Chorus

Birch Tree
Sun shining, snow gleaming

Can You help me out here
to see anything clear
New growth, old promises
Through a lifetime of fear
Go slowly my dear

Sun shining….snow gleaming…

Did I know love before
Do I  know it today
Did I know love before

c
an you show me the way
That
birch tree stands strong
It beckons to me
I think God is answering
wants me to see

God speak to me, God call
God speak to me, God call (
call to me)

I’m wandering lost
In the sun through the snow
Can it be
just as simple
as
letting it grow

Teach me to let it go slow
To see it as beauty as it unfolds

Sun shining, (speak to me) snow gleaming…call to me
Teach me, teach me to grow
T
each me, to let the new show
And hold on to the old that’s not ready to go
